Indigo Shibori

“Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dye technique that involves creasing, folding, dyeing, stitching, binding and knotting, to create beautiful and well defined patterns. Fabrics are traditionally dyed with indigo which is derived from the Indigofera tinctoria plant. In medieval Japan, each village had at least one indigo dye shop where villagers would bring their clothing and fabric to dye. In 2015 the opportunity arose for Janna to travel to a small village outside of Tokyo, Japan. Traditional Japanese textile design was taught by a skilled Master indigo Dyer, who had been farming and processing indigo, rearing silk worms and designing and weaving for 20 years. Her studies focused on natural dyeing
with indigo, and shibori pattern making. Janna is inspired by the ephemeral quality of our relationship with nature and the storytelling that unfolds through hands on fabrics. The meditative nature of practicing shibori is slow and quiet - all elements that give these cared for fabrics their talismanic energy. Indigo dyeing has a wonderful potential much like in ancient times to up cycle loved garments, extending their life cycle and reducing an individuals imprint in a world where textile waste is an enormous issue.”

Hand Painting

“Influenced by a background in drawing and painting it was a natural inclination for Janna to experiment with image and line on textiles. In an expressive free form style Janna uses natural plant pigment paints to make marks on fabric, that play with a fluid organic narrative around body and landscape. These pieces are
paintings that come alive when transferred to the body, as they move and change with the wearer.”
