Janna is an artist who grew up on a farm surrounded by nature. Having always been drawn to making and creating from what is found in her immediate environment she draws inspiration from landscapes, travel, art and craftsmanship. Informed by her background studying painting and experimental textiles, she creates one of a kind textiles using natural dye stuffs such as plant matter, botanicals, minerals and non-toxic metals. Janna is influenced by cultural textiles that tell stories of past and present, made with natural materials by clever hands under age old traditions. She designs fabrics that experiment with techniques such as Japanese shibori pattern making and resist dyeing, silk painting, Balinese batik and Indian block printing.

Janna’s artistic ideals centre around exploring the human relationship to the natural world and our interactions with living and non living elements. There is an embracing of transformative practises in her making that employs forces and circumstances we cannot control - she seeks to make sense of the unknown and illustrate the beauty of chance and unpredictable outcomes. The designs capture a moment in time, fossilising a joining of elements that might not normally be imagined but now become one.

This approach to design explores an intuitive, experimental way of working, utilising alternative methods in the design process creating pieces to be considered art objects for the everyday, with a touch of something special for the heart.
